"Learning is not instinctive...Knowledge does not fall into your head without effort."
The crux of the quote and the text it's drawn from ("Learning to Learn"), reiterates what every successful person knows: success requires work and learning to learn is learning to be successful.
Success is not the maximum reward with as little effort as possible. Success takes time; it takes hard work; it takes diligence; and it takes perseverance. Most define "success" by the grade; and while grades are important, I'd like you to define "success" by what you learn and how well you learn it.
In my opinion, your success requires...
Many of you will have had success in the past by just paying attention in class, doing the homework, and maybe a little bit of studying the night before a test. You will find this method of study is not likely to be as effective in this course.
I would like you to recognize that learning is an active process, not a passive one. "Most of you employ the 'browse' method of study: read, maybe reread, and 'look over' the materials. At this level, this is not enough." (Susan Biggs)
You cannot simply sit and absorb information. You have to work to learn anything well. To study actively, you should write and speak.
You should visit here and here to get ideas; you need to utilize a variety of methods and tools to find what works best for you.

In my opinion, your success requires...
- learning the material to the best of your ability
- not quitting when it gets hard
- seeking understanding (asking questions, using any available resource(s), etc.)
- actively using self-discipline and not procrastinating
